About Cheltenham Shooting
Meet Dave...

My passion for shotgun shooting began at the age of 12, when I first tried a 20-gauge shotgun at a 'have-a-go shoot' at the Royal Bath and West Show. From the very first shot, I was hooked. I’d enjoyed using air rifles since I was 8, but this was something entirely different.

Not long after, my parents mentioned my new enthusiasm to the local gamekeeper while he was helping with a mole problem. To my delight, he invited me to help feed pheasants over the summer. After weeks of working alongside him, my dad finally agreed to let me have my own shotgun, a Lincoln folding 20b. From then on, I grabbed every opportunity to shoot, whether pigeon shooting, clays, or at game fairs.

By 16, I was shooting at a competitive level, even finding myself in a pool shoot against England’s captain, Carl Bloxam, and vice-captain, Arnie Palmer. Although I didn’t beat them, I was thrilled to stand alongside such accomplished shooters. Over time, Rugby & Motorcross took priority, and my gun spent too many years in the cabinet, though I still enjoyed the occasional shoot with my late father, who himself became a successful clay shooter.
Fast forward, I joined a local pheasant syndicate and rediscovered my passion. Around six years ago, I decided to test myself in CPSA competitions. After a steady start, my scores improved, leading to representing Gloucestershire in Skeet and, in 2024, winning the Gloucestershire All-Round Championship.
Shooting has now become a family passion as my stepson began shooting in 2023 and quickly picked up multiple county junior titles, keeping me on my toes with his talent. Inspired by this journey, I trained and qualified as a CPSA shooting instructor in July 2025.

That’s how Cheltenham Shooting was born: a way to share my lifelong love of shooting with others, whether you’re just starting out, looking to improve your skills, or aiming for competition success.
